Laveta Dixon

On June 1st we said a loving goodbye to beloved wife, mother and grandmother Laveta Grace Hammond Dixon, 79, as she went into the arms of Jesus surrounded by family. She has touched the lives of all who knew and loved her and has left a legacy of love that will comfort them. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Allen C. Dixon, Jr., of North Little Rock; her children and their spouses, Patricia Ann Inman (Mark), Richard Allen Dixon (Beth), Carol Sue Hammett (Lloyd), and Elizabeth [Libbi] Whitehurst (Scott) as well as grandchildren Justin, Allison and Sara Grace Inman; Christian Dixon; Lauren Stroud; Ashley Stratton; Josh and John Whitehurst; step-grandchild Dustin Hammett and great-grandchildren Brianna Stroud and Devin Smith. Laveta was born in 1932 in Bradford, Arkansas to William Barney and Donna Mason Hammond. She attended Arkansas State Teachers College where she met the love of her life, Allen C Dixon, Jr. After marrying she became a military wife and traveled around the continental U.S., Alaska and Europe with her growing family making many lifelong friends along the way and enjoying great adventures together as a family. Laveta loved anything to do with children and spent countless hours as a Sunday School teacher, Scout leader, and hosting play groups in addition to being an excellent piano player and nurturer of everything from broken bones to broken hearts throughout the years. She and Allen moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas after his military retirement where she worked for 20 years for the Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Education group leading their volunteer tax assistance programs. After her own retirement, she enjoyed her Bridge Club group, volunteer time with VITA, voracious reading and spending time with her family. She was an excellent cook famous for her family favorites such "sghetti n cheese", cornbread dressing, homemade soup and "trash" mix. Because she loved helping others , in lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to a charity of choice.
